Amy Mugford serves as the Communications Program Manager for the department, where she leads efforts to strengthen and evolve the department’s branding strategy. With a bachelor’s degree from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, she brings many years of expertise in graphic design, branding, and business development coordination.
Early in her career, she worked for an engineering firm as a graphic designer and business development coordinator. Through design work on proposals, engineers mentored her and encouraged her to ask questions and actively make connections to enhance her work on their projects, which has become a core to her professional growth. She was part of a team that worked on multi-billion-dollar pitches across the country and internationally. Each pitch packet was a combined effort of subject matter experts, marketers, and business development teams presenting a cohesive solution for the prospective client. Those clients were often government entities in need of new infrastructure and ways to effectively communicate these projects with their public officials and private citizens.
In her role, Amy combines creativity, strategic thinking, and leadership to deliver impactful marketing initiatives. She oversees the development and execution of marketing strategies, aligning each project with the department’s overarching vision. Her responsibilities span campaign management, brand strategy, graphic design, and production. She also manages external vendor relations, ensuring seamless coordination across projects.
Adept at designing and producing marketing collateral, Amy prepares customized and confidential communications tailored to prospects’ needs. She supports public relations initiatives, assists with website content maintenance, and contributes to the automated marketing communications system, HubSpot. Whether planning events, crafting targeted campaigns, or ensuring the department’s branding is cohesive and memorable, Amy thrives at the intersection of creativity and execution.
The last decade in economic development has transformed her perspective of local government and allowed her to interact with various departments and community partners—building bridges across the county and region. Some of these initiatives include:
- Rolling out the Loudoun Made, Loudoun Grown marketing program with the Rural Economic Development Council, along with continual enhancements and expansion as needed.
- Creating numerous pitches, including some that collaborated with the Loudoun County Department of Parks and Recreation such as the successful pitch for Loudoun United.
- Collaborating with the Department of Planning and Zoning and the Design Cabinet on the Signatures of Loudoun Design Excellence Awards.
- Facilitating the Farmer Trading Card Program with the Loudoun County Public School’s Department of Nutrition. The goal of the program is to show students where their food comes from and inspire youth to think about farming as a potential career path.
- Managing and spearheading the search for the grant system used for the Loudoun County Business Interruption Fund as well as executed various rollouts of the funding.
- Represents Loudoun Economic Development in projects for organizations including Northern Virginia Technology Council, Northern Virginia Community College, NOVA EDA, and Northern Virginia Regional Commission.
Amy’s contributions have earned her several awards for her department from the International Economic Development Council and the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals. Additionally, she is a member of Leadership Loudoun 2019 and Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments COG Institute for Regional Excellence Cohort 19. She is committed to professional growth and effective team management.
Outside of work, Amy enjoys crafting and exploring western Loudoun with her husband.
