Loudoun Innovation Protects Fans With Touch-Free Return to MLB Stadiums

As COVID-19 restrictions are lifted across the country, two of this year’s World Series favorites have deployed innovative solutions from Loudoun’s Sestra Systems into their ballparks, all in the name of fan safety.

Sestra’s IoT-connected condiment machines at concourse food vendors, triggered with a simple wave, will ensure that each hotdog, burger and bratwurst served at the hometown Nationals Park will be perfectly sauced without wasting condiments or risking the spread of germs.

Based in Sterling, Sestra’s award-winning technology was originally envisioned for beverage dispensing, providing cloud-connected, real-time feedback on the performance and uptime at the tap.

According to a recent feature in the Washington Business Journal, COVID-19 and the shutdown of many bars and social venues caused Sestra Systems to pivot to coffee and condiments, eventually partnering with True Made Foods at Nats Park.

“Touch was a big thing about getting guests and fans back in the stadium, and having a very COVID-friendly type of environment was really important,” Sestra VP of Sales and Customer Success John Hannula told WBJ. “So, eliminating the touchpoints was key to them.”

Smart Dispensing™ offers features such as real-time monitoring and automated text alerts eliminate the need to manually check product volumes or system status.

The analytics help identify waste, the smart system helps provide the perfect pour every time, and the touch-free system helps decrease the spread of germs and increase consumer confidence.

“Quality food and beverage service starts long before the product is dispensed and doesn’t end at the sale,” Sestra VP of Channels and Partnership Anju Olson said in a company blog. “Our platform and service model are built to address dispensing as part of an end-to-end solution.”

Outside of Nats Park and Fenway Park, Sestra is also working with D.C. United at Audi Field, Smithsonian Institutes, the Warner Theater, the Kennedy Performing Arts Center in D.C., and Madison Square Gardens in New York City.
