In 1996, rapid-growth Internet infrastructure company UUNET was acquired by telecom service provider MFS Communications Company, Inc., which was bought by WorldCom, Inc. later in the year. In 1998, WorldCom acquired MCI for $37 billion, creating one of biggest telecom giants in the world, based right here in Loudoun.
