The Arc of Loudoun’s ALLY Advocacy Center will be hosting the 1st Loudoun Practice Traffic Stops in collaboration with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, Leesburg Police Department, Loudoun County Fire, and Rescue, and the Loudoun Disability & Justice Coalition. The event will be on July 16th from 11 am – 1 pm at Tuscarora High School in Leesburg, Virginia. This is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved.
The event is simple: You can arrive at Tuscarora High School (801 N. King Street Leesburg, Virginia) anytime from 11 AM-1 PM. You can get in line to do a practice event or visit the “observation area” if you’d like to watch some other folks go first so you have a sense of how it will go.
What to Expect: When it is your turn, you can have an officer in the car with you to explain what is happening, or not, depending on your preference. A police officer will approach the car and ask you the same questions he/she would during a regular traffic stop. You can answer just as you usually would. You can practice identifying whether you have a disability or not. You can practice being a driver, passenger, or both. You can practice having a challenging behavior or a good day. The goal is just for you to be yourself and get more comfortable talking with the police in a stressful situation.
You can also ask the officers any questions you have, just like you would if you met them on the street.i
