Food Safety Education Session for Fruit and Vegetable Growers

As you know, food safety is a concern of growers and consumers alike, and new Federal regulation through the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act may impact you as a grower. Join us for an informal educational session to better understand this regulation and how your operation may need to adjust to reduce potential food safety concerns and comply with regulation. We will be meeting on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm at the Virginia Tech Alson H. Smith, Jr., Agricultural Research and Extension Center: 595 Laurel Grove Road, Winchester, VA 22602. Numerous Extension Agents will be present as well as Alex Goodman with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) Produce Safety Program. We will be available to help you (individually or in small groups) work through your specific operational situations and operating procedures. This is intended to be an informal workshop with lots of group discussion as well as question/answer. The goal is to learn from your peers as well as the Extension and VDACS personnel.
The general setting of the meeting is to be informal with open discussion and questions.
(Hosted by Virginia Cooperative Extension with support from YGA of VA but will open to all growers in the region wanting to attend)

10:15am – FSMA/GAP/General Food Safety quick overview
10:30am – Are you covered? (walk participants through flow chart)
10:45am – On Farm Readiness Review (as a group) – Alex Goodman, VDACS
12:30pm – lunch
1:00pm – those who want more one on one help, sit down in small groups or individually with Extension staff to work through more individual standards of operation practices
2:00pm – group recap/wrap-up with final Q&A
