SUMMARY:Workforce Development & Reskilling: Releasing the Energy of America’s Workers
DESCRIPTION:The Catalyst for Change Series explores how business leaders use moments of disruption to change the course of their companies to accelerate growth\, expand services\, meet new needs\, and re-design the way toward a brighter future. Catalyst for Change is organized by the NOVA Economic Development Alliance (NOVA EDA). \nPotential Energy. \nThat’s the scientific name of energy waiting to be released. Once it is\, it can move mountains. It’s the same with the millions of adults; young\, middle age\, older\, unemployed\, underemployed\, or in dead-end jobs who need the training and education to release their creative energy into the economy.  How about companies that need to reskill workers based on new technologies or market needs? \nThe U.S. is experiencing a shortage of skilled workers at the same time as unemployment and  underemployment remain high\, and while wages have barely moved in 10 years. Why?  The answer: Too many people don’t have the training or skills needed to secure those higher paying and rewarding jobs. \nThat’s where workforce development and reskilling come in. \nPrograms such as Elevate Virginia\, Fast Forward Virginia\, and government funded educational programs like those offered by Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) provide workers with the ability to secure training and earn certifications and even their GED/High School diplomas. Creative uses of Cares Act funding such as by the City of Manassas has dedicated $400\,000 for just this purpose. \nWhat are the well-paying jobs\, in which industries? What are the skills and training workers need to secure one? How do I transform my company through worker reskilling? Should my company develop an apprentice program? \nTopics to be discussed: \n\nWhat are the high-growth\, well-paying jobs I should target?\nWhat are the skills and training needed to get a good job?\nWhat should my company do differently to attract high potential workers?\nHow does my company assess its new needs and reskill workers?\nHow do I plan for a career and not only a job?\nWhat are the programs to help me get started?

SUMMARY:Plant Biology: Mechanisms Meet Biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Life Science Across the Globe\, a virtual series that brings together scientists and scholars around the world. \nBorne out of the global disruption of COVID-19\, Life Science Across the Globe was first launched in July 2020 by Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Research Campus along with seven other partnering sister institutes listed below. The original weekly series featured a science talk paired with a science culture talk (archived talks can be found here). \nRecognizing the continued need for international science communication\, the eight sister institutes now offer a reimagined Life Science Across the Globe series. Each month\, we identify an important science or science culture theme and bring together two or three speakers from different parts of the world to present their work or thoughts on that theme. The talks\, which are aimed at a broad audience\, are followed by a moderated panel discussion and audience questions. \nWe encourage you to participate in the live event\, but each event will also be recorded and available on the Janelia YouTube Channel. \nEach month\, Life Science Across the Globe allows you to learn about scientific and societal topics of global importance\, meet the world’s most creative scientists and scholars\, and appreciate that science is a shared global effort.  Please join us.

SUMMARY:October’s Brown Bag: National Disability Employment Awareness Month “Why Not”?
DESCRIPTION:A panel of Experts from Virginia State Government agencies chat with the Division of Registered Apprenticeship.  The Title of the Program is “Why Not?”  We have discussed “why” inclusive recruitment and selection from ALL demographics gives employers a competitive edge….so why then are there still so many individuals willing to work on the bench?  Who’s on your team? Why not change the way you recruit and select? \nWhy tune in? \nJobs\, jobs\, jobs.  Why are there so many jobs and not enough warm bodies to take them?  Employers need to take a play from the United Nations and include everybody into the pool of potential candidates.  All individuals can have a dream job with Registered Apprenticeship and those with differing abilities can be included.
