SUMMARY:Science on Tap: Tales from a Drug Developer
DESCRIPTION:Developing pharmaceutical drugs to treat human disease is a challenging and expensive process. Although huge strides have been made with many diseases\, drugs typically have several warnings and side effects\, and numerous diseases have no treatment at all. In this discussion about pharmaceutical drug discovery\, Bruce Kimmel\, CEO of Vidrio Technologies\, reveals how drugs are developed and why we don’t have a cure for everything. Kimmel received his PhD in biochemistry from U.C. Berkeley and has managed science and software projects in the commercial\, academic and nonprofit sectors.

SUMMARY:MS-L-Using Inkscape and vCarve for 2.5D CNC Projects
DESCRIPTION:This class is a follow up to the Intro to Vector Drawing with Inkscape class or for people who already have a background in vector drawing. If you want to get the most out of using the Makersmiths CNC machines\, you will want to learn how to draw for those machines so that you can create custom designs and projects.  This is a one evening class to take you through the basics of creating your design in Inkscape\, importing it into vCarve and then setting up the toolpaths for cutting on the CNC machines. Basic vector drawing skills are required to take this class. \nIn this class we will: \n\nExplain the key 2D design considerations  for 2.5D CNC projects – endmill types and sizes\, tool paths\, and order of operations.\nShow how to create basic drawings in Insckape\, then import them to vCarve and setup toolpaths for CNC cutting\nCreate a design for a sign in Inkscape and prepare it for cutting on the CNC machine.\n\nIf time permits\, this class will include a demonstration of the CNC machine carving a sign\, but in order to use the CNC on your own\, you must also take the CNC class. \n***NOTE: You will need to bring a laptop to this class\, preferably with Inkscape and the vCarve trial edition pre-installed. A separate class will be run for laser/vinyl cutting. \nThe instructor for this class is Jonathan White: JustOneCube@gmail.com \nMore information and online registration: MS-L-Using Inkscape and vCarve for 2.5D CNC Projects
