Brickyard: Another Addition to Loudoun's Entrepreneurial Foundation

the brickyard.jpg

Loudoun County, Virginia's startup ecosystem has grown even bigger with the grand opening of Brickyard , an innovative place where entrepreneurs can network and collaborate in a shared office space. Loudoun Economic Development worked with developer Clarke-Hook and serial entrepreneur Paul Singh to get Brickyard launched in its new digs near George Washington University in Ashburn.

"Small businesses drive the U.S. economy, and we're seeing that in a powerful way in Loudoun County," says Loudoun Economic Development Executive Director Buddy Rizer. "A place like Brickyard can have a multiplying effect on startups, helping founders grow faster by inspiring and collaborating with each other as they build their businesses."

Loudoun's Small Business and Entrepreneurship Manager Vanessa Jozwiak is working to make sure Loudoun startups have everything they need to be successful.

"We have two incubators in Loudoun: the Mason Enterprise Center in Leesburg and AOL Fishbowl Labs in Ashburn. We also have Makerspace in Leesburg, where startups can make working models and prototypes. We have a website, LoudounSourceLink.org, where startups can find details about these and 60 other resources, plus events, that make it easier for businesses to start, grow and thrive in Loudoun. We're building an entrepreneurial infrastructure, and Brickyard will be part of that strong foundation."

Entrepreneurs with questions about any of Loudoun's business resources can contact Jozwiak by calling Loudoun Economic Development at 703-777-0426.

Loudoun Highlights Women Startups For Global Entrepreneurship Week

1 million cups Loudoun County

Loudoun Economic Development is partnering with Empowered Women International to cosponsor a special 1 Million Cups event on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 9 a.m. at the Mason Enterprise Center, located at 202 Church Street in Leesburg. This free event is part of Global Entrepreneurship Week, which runs from November 16-22 in 140 nations worldwide.

The 1MC program gives two local entrepreneurs the chance to present their startups to an informal gathering of peers, mentors, advisors and small business owners. Presenters get feedback on how to improve their potential for success. On November 18, the presenters will be alumni from Empowered Women International.

“EWI’s mission is to create jobs and opportunities for immigrant, refugee and at-risk women in our community,” said Loudoun’s Small Business and Entrepreneurship Manager Vanessa Jozwiak. “We invite anyone who’s building a business to come to 1MC on November 18 and be inspired by these women.”

1MC was started by the Kauffman Foundation and now takes place in 77 cities across the U.S. each week. It’s based on the premise that it takes a million cups of coffee to launch a successful business – in other words, making one-on-one connections with potential partners, employees, investors and allied professionals is key to a company’s growth.

“Loudoun got involved with 1MC to help speed up the process of getting new businesses up and running,” said Loudoun Economic Development Executive Director Buddy Rizer. “We take some of the trial-and-error out of connecting entrepreneurs to the right people and the right information. We want to make it easier to create, locate and accelerate businesses in Loudoun.”

Loudoun’s Commercial Real Estate Investment Quadruples in One Year

From craft brewing to hops processing, and from companies working in outer space to companies working in cyberspace, Loudoun County, Virginia’s dynamic economy has enjoyed one of its best years ever. Loudoun Economic Development’s new annual report reveals that commercial real estate investment quadrupled in Loudoun County in just one year.

In the fiscal year that began in July 2014 and ended in June 2015, there was more than $1.3 billion in commercial real estate investment in Loudoun County. This represents a 459 percent increase over FY14, and is the largest investment recorded since Economic Development began tracking this metric.

“According to the New York-based financial technology firm SmartAsset, Loudoun was #1 in all of Virginia in new commercial investment in the last fiscal year,” said Loudoun Economic Development Director Buddy Rizer.

The investment was made by 57 companies that were recruited to or retained in Loudoun, and is a 46 percent increase over the number of companies assisted the year before. These companies added or retained more than 3,400 jobs and 3.7 million square feet of commercial real estate in Loudoun.

“This has been a real team effort, and our success would not be possible without the strong partnership of other agencies in Loudoun, like Planning and Zoning and Building and Development. We’re very fortunate to have the support of our business community, and benefit from great leadership provided by County Administration and the Board of Supervisors,” Rizer said.

Economic Development’s annual report is available online at biz.loudoun.gov/AnnualReport. Businesses that would like to know more about moving to or expanding in Loudoun should call 1-(800)-LOUDOUN.Read on...

Loudoun’s 2015 Fall Farm Tour Prep Underway; Farmers Invited to Participate

On October 17 and 18, the gates and barns of Loudoun County, Virginia farms will open to the public for the annual Fall Farm Tour. Any farmers interested in participating in this year’s event should apply online at biz.loudoun.gov/farmtourapp. Completed applications must be received by 5 p.m. on August 18, 2015.

All types of rural businesses are encouraged to apply. Past Fall Farm Tours have offered the public opportunities to pick pumpkins and apples; taste wines, artisanal cheeses and other fresh, locally produced food; interact with horses, sheep, alpacas and goats; and learn how to grow healthy plants.

The goal of the Fall Farm Tour is to raise awareness of Loudoun-grown products and the county’s vibrant agricultural community. Every year, more tourists and visitors interested in experiencing local culture, tasting farm products, and learning about the unique farms and environment of the county take part in the tour on the third weekend of October.

“Because so many of our farmers work long hours, it’s difficult to host many small, individual tours,” says Loudoun Agricultural Development Officer Kellie Boles. “The Fall Farm Tour offers visitors a chance to see working farms in operation, in all their different aspects.”

Economic Development Director Buddy Rizer explained, “This is a great showcase for our thriving rural economy. Our goal is to continue to grow the estimated $69 million it already contributes to Loudoun County.”

Brochures for the Fall Farm Tour, including a map and directions to all participating farms, will be available at Loudoun County libraries and community centers, at Visit Loudoun in Leesburg, and online at LoudounFarms.org.

Farmers with questions should contact Rural Marketing Manager Susan VanEpps at 703-777-0426, or email.
