“Companies have two choices when they’re deciding on where to locate their business. They can choose a community that looks like a place where the company and their employees will fit in, or they can move into a community where they will blaze new trails. One way they communicate their decision is through architecture and landscaping,” said Loudoun Economic Development’s Executive Director Buddy Rizer, whose department sponsors the design awards.
This year’s Signatures award-winners exemplify both choices. They range from Delirium Café, which has repurposed a private home built around 1800, to the new Sterling Library, which asked the community what it wanted and incorporated some of their ideas in the form of specially designed maker space, co-working areas, jelly bean pods, Brody lounges, Solatube skylights and programmable LED lighting.
“Companies showcase their identities in amazing ways in Loudoun,” Rizer said. “For example, on their newest data center campus, RagingWire planted 1,000 trees and shrubs, including Red Maples, Honey Locusts and Crepe Myrtles. It’s one of several visually groundbreaking projects that continue to shape Loudoun as a unique environment.”
The Design Cabinet has held the annual awards program since 2005. The community is invited to submit nominations each winter, and the projects are voted on by the cabinet and a group of students. This year’s winning projects were selected from more than 30 nominations.
