Meet Sten Sellier, founder of Loudoun’s Beltway Brewing Company. Born in D.C. and raised in Northern Virginia, Sten got an engineering degree from Georgia Tech and moved to Southern California.

After a short stint in telecom, he worked for eight years designing automated material handling systems.

His passion for brewing beer began on a small scale at home in 2001, while he lived in California. It didn’t take long for him to realize he needed to quit his regular day job and make beer for a living.

In 2011 he made the leap to quit working for “the man” and go for it. Sten began searching for a brewery that would help him produce his recipes while he built his brand. To his dismay, he found none that were willing or able.

Sten decided that there needed to be a brewery dedicated to helping start-up and growing breweries expand their operations. Sten founded Beltway Brewing Company in 2011 to be that brewery. Since then, he has been a driving force in helping other Loudoun breweries get started.

“My music analogy for this is, if beer is music, and beer brands are the bands, then we’re a recording studio,” he told Loudoun Now in a 2016 interview. “You come here for us to use our fancy equipment and our fancy and educated engineers to produce an album that really kicks butt, but it’s up to you to sell it.”

If you’re a restaurateur who wants a unique house label, or a microbrewery that’s maxed out on tank space or a would-be beer baron who wants to test the market, Sten will happily rent out his brew kettle and fermenters so you can mix your barley and hops.
