For the first time in Loudoun County’s history, the number of small businesses located in the county has eclipsed the 10,000 mark, according to the Virginia Employment Commission.

The standard definition for a small business is any company with fewer than 20 employees. Loudoun’s five-digit milestone was reached during the third quarter of 2016, and comprises 86 percent of Loudoun’s 11,810 businesses.

The report also revealed that Loudoun small businesses employ 37,304, or nearly one in four of all 161,592 Loudoun employees.

The numbers are nearly identical to the Commonwealth of Virginia overall, where 87 percent of all 258,780 businesses are classified as small, employing 23 percent of Virginia’s workforce.

For both Loudoun County and Virginia, the largest single source of employment comes from businesses with 20-49 employees. Such businesses employ 30,282 workers in Loudoun and 633,145 workers overall in Virginia.
