Workforce Wednesday: Jasper Akerboom, Yeast Master and Brewer, Lost Rhino Brewing Co.

Dr. Adriaan “Jasper” Akerboom is an experienced microbiologist, brewing scientist and biochemist, and has spent the last six years focused on biosensor development for in-vivo molecular imaging.

Using protein engineering techniques, Jasper designs, improves and engineers proteins for applications in the brewing industry. Jasper’s work has been applied to local craft brewing leader Lost Rhino, where he started the brewery’s brew laboratory from scratch. Today, three yeast strains isolated by Jasper are currently being used in their commercial beers, and he serves as the brewing scientist and brewer.

Jasper moved to Ashburn after completing his education at Wageningen University and Research Centre in the Netherlands. He got a job as a research specialist at Janelia Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in the lab of Loren Looger. That meant switching gears — no more microbiology — the focus was and still is neuroscience at Janelia. He worked there until 2014.

Jasper has more than 12 years of experience in laboratory work, focusing on the expression, purification, and characterization of enzymes, regulator and structural proteins, as well as the microbiology of archaea, bacteria and yeasts, quality assessment and control, and brewing laboratory management.
