Data centers are big business in Loudoun. With our large amount of available open space, power and redundant fiber, Loudoun is the perfect location for new data centers and expansions.

Digital Realty is one company that is taking advantage of what Loudoun has to offer. On May 9, they broke ground on their fourth building in their Ashburn data center campus. This two-story, 214,000 sqft. facility is specifically designed to meet the technical needs of  companies seeking a best-in-class data center solution.

Dave Caron, Senior Vice President, Portfolio Management at Digital Realty says of the expansion, “From a highly customized build-to-suit data center to our move-in ready suites with dedicated, redundant power and cooling infrastructure, and Powered Base Building solutions, we believe that this facility will be able to accommodate a large majority of the data center requirements from customers seeking space in this highly-strategic market.”

The data center market is one of DED’s key business sectors because it’s perfectly-suited for a rapidly-growing county like Loudoun. As Delegate Tag Greason pointed out at the groundbreaking, “[Data centers] don’t put pressure on our ever-increasing roads, our ever-increasing schools, and we will still get the tax revenue benefit from a project like this. So from a county’s perspective, it’s a double benefit.”

While data centers don’t produce a huge burden on an area’s infrastructure, a construction project like the one that Digital Realty is undertaking will create over 100 jobs for skilled tradesmen, as well as eventually creating a dozen well-paying engineering positions within the company.

DED Assistant Director Buddy Rizer says of the project, “Digital Realty’s commitment to Loudoun further reaffirms our importance as a center for internet activity.”
