Loudoun County Virginia More Than You Think

The Roads that Get You Where You Need to Go

Loudoun's road network runs the gamut from the nation's very first state-of-the-art, privately owned tollroad, to historic, winding turnpikes.

While appreciating this variation in road character and usage, Loudoun County Government works with its public and private local, regional and state partners to continually address the increasing road demand that naturally accompanies population growth. Among the efforts in the County's Transportation Plan are:

  • To the extent allowed by funding source requirements, the county will direct transportation funding to suburban areas where planned land uses and population densities warrant the expansion of roadway capacity and the implementation and expansion of transit services.
  • The county supports the establishment of a funding program for Route 28, including participation of the private sector under the provisions of the Public Private Participation Act of 1995, to implement a program to accelerate the construction of Route 28 interchanges and the widening of Route 28 to eight lanes.
  • The County will support a Route 7 Corridor Improvement Program funded through Loudoun County Road Improvement bonds and other sources. The program will include construction of interchanges at Loudoun County Parkway. Ashburn Village Boulevard and Belmont Ridge Road, Route 659 as well as expansion of Route 7 to eight lanes between Route 28 and the Town of Leesburg.
  • The County will support a funding program for short-term and long-term projects to accelerate the improvements, widening and relocation of Route 659 to six lanes between Route 7 and North Star Boulevard and six-lanes on North Star Boulevard south to Prince William County.
  • Route 7 East of Route 28 is envisioned as a gateway to Loudoun County. Future improvements to this segment of the roadway will be designed during the Community Plan process and will support the revitalization land use strategies envisioned for this area.
  • The County will support a funding program for Route 50 to complete widening of the road to six lanes and to expedite construction of planned interchanges.
  • The County supports bicycle and pedestrian improvements and traffic calming measures coordinated with road improvements in suburban areas. The County will consider appropriate design standards to ensure pedestrian and bicycle mobility.
