Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is currently the fifth busiest airport in the country, and it’s one of the few international airports with room to grow. Dulles Airport has always been seen as an important economic engine for Loudoun County.
• IAD served nearly 25 million travelers in 2007.
• Loudoun established, and continues to maintain, land use policies to support the airport’s operation and expansion by encouraging uses that are compatible with the airport on adjacent and surrounding corridors, while mitigating residential encroachment.
• This county maintains a supportive relationship with Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority which operates both of the local federally owned airports, Washington Reagan National and Washington Dulles International.
• Dulles is currently in the midst of a $5 billion expansion, building additional runways and roadways, new terminal buildings, a new air traffic control tower, parking garages and a state-of-the art underground train system, the new Aerotrain.
