Loudoun's forward-thinking land use planning has established business-friendly corridors suitable for Loudoun's diverse industry base along with large planned use developments in the eastern, suburban part of the county. Things started to change for us when Loudoun was chosen for the location of Dulles Airport in the late 1950s and its opening in 1962. The next major locates, in the 1990s, included Orbital Sciences Corporation, AOL, and Worldcom (now Verizon Business). These companies spurred interest of similar companies and remain our strong anchors for our ICT and Aerospace & Federal Contractor clusters. The 2000s brought us additional opportunity when the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Janelia Farm Research Campus decided to locate on their campus overlooking the Potomac River; a Life Science cluster is emerging. 

With all this high tech activity, it can be surprising that farming is not only continuing in Loudoun, but we have actually seen an increase in the number of farms.
